Power DAF - German as a foreign language

The project

The economical situation and the labour market of the region Schwäbisch Gmünd are showing positive development trends. Though, the benefit does not include all participants of the society. Particularly young immigrants have problems of integration into the labour market. The reasons are manifold: communication deficiencies in German, poor or non school certificates and low or insufficient professional qualification. Young migrants, not having passed the regular German school system, are often not informed about support opportunities such as vocational guidance of the employment centres. Furthermore the experience of professional traineeships is missing. Besides the non-native parents often do not have the know how to support their children by searching apprenticeships and potential job opportunities.

The current project addresses this complex of problems and aims at preparing young migrants (until the age of 30 years) for an occupation in the labour market. Three partner organisations, the Kolping Training Centre Schwäbisch Gmünd, the Education Centre Schwäbisch Gmünd and the IN VIA Catholic Social Work are working together in three sub-projects to achieve this purpose. Within the first sub-project the participants attend a German language course “German for the job” offered by the Education Centre Schwäbisch Gmünd. This course concludes with a certificate “German for the job”, an international approved exam. The course is followed by vocational qualification in the Kolping Training Centre in connection with a vocational traineeship. During these two sub-projects the participants receive individual assistance from the staff of IN VIA Katholische Mädchensozialarbeit Diözese Rottenburg Stuttgart e.V. / IN VIA Jugendmigrationsdienst Schwäbisch Gmünd, which is based on specific profiling and the method of case management for each participant. This support is extended beyond the traineeship to assure the success of the project.

We aim at a placement quota into the labour market of at least 50%. This may seem humble; however, in light of difficult personal situations of the participants, we consider this a success.
