ICT – Intercultural Training for social Integration

The project

Europe is unifying – this leads to an increasing number of immigrants in European countries and presents institutions working in the area of social integration with new challenges. Workers from city and rural government offices, social institutions and educational institutions require intercultural competences more and more in order to plan organise and offer their services. The employees of the Kolping-Bildungswerk also experience, day to day, the significance of intercultural training for their work. That may be explained by the constant growth of enrolment of participants of foreign nationality in our schools and education centres. According to the current assessment of the aforementioned group, enrolment is approximately at 22%. Because we would like to create an excellent learning environment for all participants regardless of their origin or of their religion, our engagement in the EU project “ICT - Intercultural Training for Social Integration“ has had much significance.

Representing the institution, both the Kolping Training Centre in Ravensburg and EU point, Kolping’s department which specialises in EU projects, took an active part in the venture. Together with 14 other educational institutions representing six European countries, work was done on a project whose goal was the development of a training model including manual and training guidelines for specialists working in the area of social integration.

Additionally, the needs of trainers in partner institutions were determined and analysed. Parallel to this, the project partners came with and combined “best practice” examples relative to the theme “intercultural competence“ for their respective countries. From the conclusions that could be made from the two actions, a competence profile was drawn that specifies the particular competences the workers in this field should possess. This profile was tested and confirmed with the target groups within the framework of a so-called focus group. Subsequently, the competences under investigation were preserved in the form of training modules. They contain themes such as language, culture, social competence, laws and legal stipulations relevant to these themes. Didactical methods with regard to the teaching of competence were also included and a lesson plan, intended as a support for the trainer where the appropriateness of methods becomes an issue, was created.

The result of two years of work is that of a training model tailored to function at a European level. It offers a holistic approach to intercultural training. The content is rich in variety and it is tailored to the targeted groups. Thanks to its modular construction it is highly adaptable to the user and the users organisation. The module can be obtained printed as well as in digital form as a manual and a CD. For those interested please contact
