Geriatric Nurse

The project

In the region of Spaichingen a great demand for qualified workers in professions in the fields of health and care was evidenced. Faced with this deficit, a project was developed with the goals of its reduction and also that of giving the unemployed a perspective and a path of re-entry into the job market.

The 12 month long qualification programme began in April 2003. The participants consisted of eleven people, predominantly female, who number among the long-time jobless and those attempting re-entry into the job market as well as migrants. Along with the specialised training, additional language training in the German language was offered augmented with personalised counselling which has been well received by the participants.

Ten of the eleven participants successfully completed the programme in achieving certification as “state certified geriatric nurse”. Seven of the ten found immediate employment, the remaining three expanded upon their skills by participating in further education classes in the field of geriatric care. In April of 2004 a follow-up project with eight participants came to an equally successful conclusion.
